The Michigan Chapter of American Public Works Association awarded the City of Novi Project of the Year in the category of disaster or emergency construction/repair ($1M to $5M) for its Boardwalk Repair Program.

Along with the City, the engineering consultant, AECOM and contractor, L. J. Construction, were also recognized. The disaster or emergency construction/repair category recognizes projects which include techniques and timing for safety, community relations, environmental protection, adverse conditions, and additional considerations.

Prior to the project, several of the 35 city-maintained boardwalks were deteriorated and compromised to the point where they had to be closed to the public because they were dangerous for use. The project rehabilitated 31% of the City’s boardwalk network. A total of $1.2M was spent repairing 11 boardwalks. Over 2,400 feet of boardwalk was repaired, with 1,900 feet being removed and replaced.

Typically, winners are recognized at the annual APWA state chapter conference banquet held in May; however, due the COVID-19 crisis, the conference was canceled.
