Novi residents will see a different shade of green driving through their neighborhoods on trash day starting July 1.

That’s when GFL Environmental USA will replace Waste Management as the sole provider for trash, recycling, and yard waste services. Novi City Council approved an eight-year contact with GFL that provides cost savings to residents throughout the life of the contract.

The first-year cost to residents is $138 per year compared to the $173.88 per year cost currently being paid to Waste Management. GFL’s fee in year eight is still below that current cost at $148.61. Furthermore, condominium owners will receive a different rate as they usually do not require yard waste collection. Condo residents will enjoy a $111 fee in year one and a $119.53 in year eight of the agreement. The cost is collected as a fee on the summer and winter tax bills.

Residents are to expect the same high level of service they have been accustomed to over the last five years with no changes being made to trash, bulk items or recycling services, along with no changes to service days.

OUT WITH THE OLD (CARTS), IN WITH THE NEW
All residents on the City contract will be receiving a new 95-gallon trash cart and a 65-gallon recycling cart from GFL starting the week of June 14. Please continue using your Waste Management carts until they are removed following your last collection day (June 24, 25, 28, 29, 30). Leave your carts at the curb following collection on your last service day. If your cart is not removed within 2-3 days, call 866.797.9018. Residents will have until July 31 to request a swap in size or removal after their GFL carts are delivered.

YARD WASTE DEADLINE EXTENDED INTO DECEMBER
One enhancement residents will notice is the extension of yard waste pickup. Community members have long been clamoring for a date later in the fall and it was in turn negotiated into the contract. Yard waste service will now run from the first Monday in April through the second full week of December. Those residents who are physically disabled and have signed up for the Door-to-Curb Refuse Collection Services will receive the same service from GFL. Those who need this type of collection can request the service – with a statement from a physician – by calling 248.735.5640 or filling out the form at cityofnovi.org/trash.

The same holiday schedule that was in place with Waste Management will remain the same with GFL. Holidays observed include: New Years Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day. If one of the holidays falls during the week on or before your collection day in a given week, your collection will be one day behind.

The City of Novi remains a partner in the Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County (RRRASOC) for recycling and disposal of Household Hazardous Waste items. Novi residents and residents of the RRRASOC member communities can attend any RRRASOC Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) event.

Two upcoming HHW events are scheduled for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on July 17 at the Wixom Department of Public Services and for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 2 at the Novi Department of Public Works. You can find more information at rrrasoc.org or by calling 248.208.2270.
