Novi Men's Cross County
Downs Highlanders

9/20/2006 by Robert Smith and Scott Olson

According to veteran Novi High School Coach Robert Smith, the plan was simple: Break away early. The plan worked Tuesday for the Wildcats, as they soundly defeated the Howell Highlanders (17th in the 2005 MHSAA Division 1 State Finals). The Highlanders were fresh off of an impressive 2nd place finish at the Holly Invitational last weekend (second of 19 teams only to the defending state-runners up Ann Arbor Pioneer), but it wasn't enough to keep up with the Cats.

At the sound of the gun a large pack of Wildcats took the lead. Those seven harriers were followed by three Howell runners. By the mile mark, Novi's front pack established a 10 second lead. This continued for most of the race.

It became apparent that Howell had a plan. Because Novi was a statistically better team, Howell hoped for a "Hail Mary". They were hoping that Novi's front pack would become complacent in the front and with that Howell might make a late charge to try to upset the Wildcats at the finish line.

Unfortunately for Howell, Novi's runners were well aware of this tactic. The Novi front pack continued to push for nearly 2.5 miles before they cruised in together for the victory.

Kenny MacDonough, Mike Wheat, Alex Prasad, Josh Lumley, and Mike Beard all came across the finish line together. Scott Wagner was very close to his teammates with a solid 7th place finish. Alfredo Cateriano rounded out our top 7 by coming in 10th overall.

In all, Novi put 10 runners across the line before Howell could bring in their #4 runner.

Coach Smith explained, "our athletes ran a very smart race. It is very gratifying to know that our athletes understand how to race, and how to respond to different racing strategies. From top to bottom our runners are getting tougher and smarter every time they 'toe the line'."

Twenty-three Wildcats set season Cass Benton records Tuesday. More importantly, 9 athletes set overall personal bests

"I believe the best is yet to come," said Coach Smith following the race.
