Supporting Gatt for Mayor - he listens
October 3, 2011 by Lynn Kocan

I am supporting Bob Gatt for Mayor of Novi. Quality of life in Novi is paramount to us all. Many times, unless and until you are directly affected by budgets, projects or plans of the City, you don’t know how important it is to have a representative on City Council who will not only hear your concerns, but who actually listens.

Most recently Meadowbrook Lake Subdivision was involved with the City regarding the upgrade of the Meadowbrook Lake dam and the construction of a large swale through private properties, which necessitated the conveyance of easements to the City. Obviously, this was very personal and sensitive to our residents. The City had their plan, which we felt was overly intrusive to the private property owners. It took time to work out a compromise, which was only possible with the leadership and conviction of Bob Gatt. Bob took the initiative to schedule the necessary meetings between the homeowners association and city staff, and he was able to convince City Council to grant the additional time necessary to finalize an agreement. Bob Gatt’s position was not a popular one; he was not in the majority. But Bob’s commitment and perseverance were vital to the revision of the plan, which still benefits the City by bringing the dam up to code but has less negative impact on the neighborhood.

The Southeast quadrant of Novi has had other recent plans that directly impacted the residents. City Council was petitioned regarding the proposed increase in the speed limit on Meadowbrook Road between Eight Mile and Ten Mile. The 30 mph speed limit was ultimately maintained, which is best for this residential area. Another project was the proposed 10’ walking path through wooded easements of residents on Nine Mile Road between Meadowbrook and Haggerty Roads. Several Council members were adamant about minimizing the cost to the City, with little consideration of the impact on the residents. The final plan was changed to lessen the width of the path and to avoid as many trees as possible. Bob Gatt not only listened to the residents, but he was determined to support plans that helped minimize negative impacts and maintain quality of life.

Bob Gatt is dedicated to public service. He knows what it’s like to be an employee of the City, a resident, and a responsible representative. He was appointed as Mayor Pro-Tem because of his knowledge and experience. I respect Bob for the determination and cooperation he has shown for the residents of Novi. He understands the importance of listening to concerns and taking action. Bob is very approachable and willing to discuss whatever issues you may have. He may or may not share your opinion, but you will know that he listened to you and that he has yours and the City’s best interest in mind. Again, I support Bob Gatt for Mayor of Novi; I hope you will too.
