Wal-Mart a positive thing for Novi and the Town Center
October 11, 2010 by Matt Forche, NHS Student

The Novi Town Center is dying. I believe the addition of a Wal-Mart to this location would help Novi thrive. The amount of people coming to the Town Center from other cities is lowering. A Wal-Mart would do nothing but good for our city.

Do we want a dead town center with gaping holes? Or do we want an active vital retail core just off an adequate highway system. Wal-Mart and stores like it add to the quality of life in our community because it provides consumer choices that otherwise would be unavailable.

A study showed that Wal-Mart consumers can save up to $2,500 a year. If my family shopped as Wal-Mart at the convenient location on their way home from work the yearly savings could easily pay for my participation in high school baseball and football.

People argue that a Wal-Mart in Novi would cause a large amount of traffic. Last time I checked having traffic into a city to patronize stores and restaurants was a good thing. Just ask the city of Detroit. People would be bringing in their money to spend in our city.

Also this supercenter would bring in low paying jobs to the area. This is perfect for students struggling to find jobs. The Wal-Mart in New Hudson did not hurt their communities but anchored a huge explosion in added retail and food outlets.

A Wal-Mart in place of the old Mervyns will help Novi grow as well as provide families with options to save money. It’s important to convince others who are unaware of the opportunities available in our city.
