Plane crashes on landing in New
Hudson, pilot and passenger walk away
December 4, 2011
NEW HUDSON, MI - The Oakland
County Sheriff's office reports a plane crashed on landing at the
Oakland Southwest / New Hudson Airport about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Officials indicate the 50 year-old pilot
from Brighton was attempting to land a single-engine Piper Saratoga
when he overshot the runway, and ended up in a marshy swamp off the
runway.
Neither the pilot or his 44 year-old
male passenger from Livonia were injured.
FAA records indicate the plane, tail
number N6059U, is registered to Premier Furnace Specialists in
Farmington Hills, and was manufactured in 2008.
The names of the pilot and passenger
were not released.
Winds at the time were about 9 knots
across the runway, as reported in Howell. This is within
specifications for the aircraft involved.
In unrelated
news, another Piper Saratoga was reported
missing inbound to Mackinac Island from St. Ignace, a 6 minute
flight, about the same time Saturday. The U.S. Coast Guard searched
Lake Huron today, and the plane was located on the mainland about 100 yards
from shore. Killed were Joe Pann and Tom Phillips, both of northern Michigan. Phillips was an
Amazon.com executive.
The FAA is investigating both incidents.
