Crawford
works to move fireworks bill through State House
November 9, 2011
LANSING, MI - The
House Regulatory Reform Committee on Wednesday unanimously approved
legislation that will legalize consumer-grade fireworks in Michigan,
allowing residents the freedom to possess and use the fireworks
without fear of penalty.
Rep. Hugh D. Crawford, R-Novi, chairs
the committee that voted 14-0 in favor of the bill, which originated
in the state Senate.
"Allowing Michigan residents the
fireworks freedom granted in neighboring states removes unnecessary
government from the details of individual lives," Crawford said. "We
must consider the immediate and long-term impact of all votes we
take, and believe this bill is a good one for our state and our
residents. Local businesses will benefit as Michiganders purchase
fireworks here at home, contributing to the local economy and even
spurring job creation."
The state fire marshal supports the
legislation. The Fireworks Safety Fee will go toward the cost of
training and safety inspection by police and fire personnel.
Senate Bill 194 will now be taken up
by the full House of Representatives.
