Novi, Mich. — Seventeen years ago when Bobbie Murphy moved to
Novi, she had no inkling that being a trustee on the Novi School
Board would be in her future. Yet, four years ago, she was elected
to serve the children in Novi as just that: a trustee on the Novi
Community School District Board of Education.
The past four years have not been an
easy time to be on a school board in the state of Michigan by
anyone’s account. School Board Trustees advocates for the education
of children, and recent legislative changes have required
unprecedented advocacy efforts at both the state and federal levels
in order to simply keep children’s educational needs as a priority.
The local handling of diminishing revenues has required difficult,
and sometimes unpopular, decisions to be made, and recent
legislative incentives to encourage retirement has resulted in
dramatic changes in personnel in almost every district.
Even at such a time as this, Mrs.
Murphy is excited about continuing to serve in her current role, and
will be seeking re-election on November 8th. “Novi appears poised to
emerge from the recent economic downturn as an educational leader,”
Murphy states. “The diligent fiscal management of our leadership
team, combined with the unfailing support of our community and the
human capital that is invested from our parents, staff and
administration has allowed us to continue to provide outstanding
educational opportunities for our kids. I feel very grateful to have
been a part of that effort.”
“With a new administrative team, new
leadership in some of our schools, and recently settled contracts
with our staff, we are ready to move forward with a renewed
excitement and energy that sometimes comes with change. I am excited
for the future of Novi’s children, and remain committed to the
vision and mission of our district, considering every decision’s
impact on each student’s ability to reach their individual
potential.” Murphy adds, “ I have had considerable ‘team’ and
leadership experiences in my life, and have had numerous
opportunities to impact the lives of kids, but can not think of one
that has the same implications for the future that serving as a
trustee of this district has. It is a responsibility I do not take
lightly.”
Murphy currently serves on the
Legislative Action Network – Novi, and has been spotted in Lansing
rallying and advocating for the education of Novi’s children. She
served as the board liaison to the Novi Educational Foundation and
is currently assisting with their efforts to gain additional support
for the organization that provides enhanced educational
opportunities for the children in Novi Schools. She also served as
the board secretary, and is a Certified Board Member of the Michigan
Association of School Boards.
Murphy has four children of her own,
two recent Novi graduates who are pursuing their college educations,
a sophomore at Novi High School, and a seventh grader at Novi Middle
School. She has been married to her husband, Rob, for 22 years.
Murphy received a Bachelor’s of Social Work degree from Bowling
Green State University and a Master’s of Social Work from the
University of Michigan. Murphy is currently a stay at home mom who
keeps busy managing her children’s busy schedules, as well as, her
daughter’s ice hockey team. She enjoys serving at her church,
leading a bible study for women, reading, running and tennis.
