FBI
stats show once again that Novi is a very safe city
September 20, 2011
Washington D.C. — The FBI on Monday released 2010 crime
statistics for the country, and once again Novi came through as one
of the safest cities in the region.
Based on population, Novi's violent crime rate was just 0.66 per
1,000 residents, and the property crime rate was 18 per 1,000
residents.
In comparison with other area "safe
cities," Farmington Hills rates were 1.52 and 17 respectively, and
Livonia's were 1.74 and 23.
Year to year, Novi fared very well.
Violent crime went down 43% and property crime went down 23%. Of the
three cities, only Livonia - recently labeled as the speed-trap
capital of the country in the NY Times - saw an increase in violent
crime year to year.
Nation-wide, violent crime was down
6%, and property crime was down 3%, from 2009 to 2010, according to
the FBI.
Novi
Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police David E. Molloy notes,
"Obviously, I am very proud of the Novi Police Department and the
sustained dedication and commitment of our officers, but it is the
whole community that ensures a low crime rate low compared to other
cities. Novi was recently named as one of the Top Ten Best Towns and
Cities for Families by Family Circle Magazine and one of the factors
included in their rankings was safety. Similarly, economic
development is encouraged and businesses chose to locate here
because of our low crime rate. We will continue to work hard each
and every day to ensure the safety and well-being of all Novi
community members.”
Mayor ProTem Bob Gatt
stated, "The
recently released FBI statistics naming Novi as one of the safest
cities in the area once again affirms the City's dedication to
public safety. The core purpose of any government is to keep its
citizens safe and Novi has been a leader in doing so since Lee
BeGole started the Novi Police Department in 1954. Kudos to the
courageous men and women of the Novi Police Department and to Police
Chief David Molloy and his staff for continuing the effort started
so long ago. The people of Novi are fortunate to have you!"
