Novi Community Schools approve district goals; announce new staff
September 9, 2011

At last evening's Board of Education meeting, high-level long-term goals proposed last month were approved.

Here is an excerpt from the district:

The district’s mission and vision focus on developing each student’s potential, creating a world-class education, and ensuring that each student has the knowledge, skills, and character to be successful. District goals would take these lofty aims and define them. Ultimately objectives that are measurable and specific would be developed to hold the Superintendent accountable.

Goals must be long-term but lead to short-term objectives. These short-term objectives help drive the activities of the district. After a spirited and lengthy discussion, four goals were identified. These goals identify what the district needs to accomplish in order to fulfill its mission and vision.

1. The Novi Community School District will ensure that each student will make no less than one year’s growth in one year’s time.

2. The Novi Community School District will ensure that all students achieve at a high level. (There will be no achievement gaps.)

3. The Novi Community School District will maintain a 10% fund balance in order to maintain and enhance opportunities for students.

4. The Novi Community School District will create common language, systems, and principles to improve organizational quality.

The administrative team would take these goals and work with the AdvancED team and process and every employee group to define specifically measurable objectives.

While these four district goals cannot be accomplished in one year, they can drive the direction of the district and focus the Superintendent. By having long-term goals the Board of Education communicates that it is interested in creating a solid and sustainable structure. The purpose of these goals is to establish a road map that we can follow where we can be deliberate and purposeful as we chart the direction for the district.

Also Thursday, the following new staff hires were formally approved:
