NOVI, MI – Quick
response and skillful teamwork saved a handicapped Novi resident
from his burning home on Monday afternoon.
Officials report that a teenage
female neighbor saw smoke coming from a residence on Norfolk in
Novi. She called 911 and a fire engine was on the scene in less than
five minutes. She also alerted firefighters that someone might be
inside.
Firefighters searched the home,
located a 56 year-old man who could not move from his assistance
chair, and quickly and safely removed him from
the home. He was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation, and
transported to Providence Park Hospital in Novi for evaluation and
additional treatment.
Firefighters had the fire under
control within minutes, and completely out a short time later.
Although the fire wall between the garage and residential area
limited the spread of fire, there was extensive smoke and soot
damage throughout the home. 1,500 gallons of water were used to
extinguish the blaze. 20 firefighters, police and medics were on the
scene.
The fire scene is currently under
investigation by the Novi Fire Marshal and investigators from the Oakland
County Sheriff's Arson Unit. Preliminary reports indicate the fire
may have started in the garage, however it is unknown exactly where
it originated at this point.
Novi Director of Public Safety David
E. Molloy notes, "Fire protection officers Paul Mullett, Jeff
Lachman, Josh Bunse and Kevin Pierce were responsible for safely
locating the male victim inside the smoke-filled home and swiftly
removed him to a safe position for medical treatment. They did an
outstanding job and are commended for their actions."
On Tuesday afternoon, a barn on Ten
Mile Road in Lyon Township suffered extensive damage following a
fire of unknown origin. |
