Novi City Attorney Thomas Schultz Receives 2010 “Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award”
September 28, 2010

DEARBORN, MI – The City of Novi announced this week that City Attorney Thomas Schultz  received the 2010 Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award given by the Michigan Municipal League and the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA) on September 21 at the Dearborn Hyatt.

Mr. Schultz was recognized for his achievements exemplifying the highest level of accomplishment in representing municipal interests in Michigan courts. Mr. Schultz received a congratulatory letter from MAMA President, Stephen K. Postema, in which Mr. Postema acknowledged, “Your contributions as municipal attorney for the City of Novi and other communities have been numerous. Your work on matters involving ordinance drafting, contract review, compliance with the Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act requirements, property taxation and special assessments, property maintenance/nuisance abatement and the acquisition of land for public purposes are only some of the ways you have promoted and advanced the interests of Michigan communities.”

Mr. Schultz, a partner at the law firm Secrest Wardle in Farmington Hills, has concentrated his practice in municipal law since starting with the firm in 1991. He is also the City Attorney for the City of Farmington, and provides general counsel services for several other Oakland County communities, including the City of Farmington Hills and Bloomfield Township. He has also acted as special counsel for other communities.

In addition to municipal work, Mr. Schultz specializes in real estate transactions and litigation involving zoning and land use approvals, purchase and sales agreements, development approval documents, natural resource regulation, and subdivision and condominium issues. He has assisted clients in eminent domain proceedings, special assessments, real property taxation, Brownfield Redevelopment projects, MEGA grants, and other complex land use and redevelopment issues.

Mr. Schultz graduated from the University of Detroit Law School in 1988. He holds an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Detroit (1985).
