The People's Editorials A fiscally conservative budget is approved April 26, 2008 As Michigan’s economy continues to weather troubled times, it is exciting to note that Novi’s annual budget talks finished ahead of schedule, with near unanimous agreement. The result appears to be a fiscally sound and conservative budget that all should be very pleased with. The $32.6 million budget proposed for 2008-2009, down $1.5 million from the previous year’s budget, continues to focus on core services while holding the line on staff positions and expenses. The proposed budget takes a fiscally conservative approach, increasing the city’s rainy day fund from 8-12% to 18%, an all-time high for Novi. The city has also increased contributions to retirement funds, which are now believed to be covering expected future needs, and has included sorely needed funds for “Welcome to Novi” signs. Even though revenues from the state and from local property taxes have dipped in the past couple years, Novi continues to be a fiscally sound, well managed city that is providing citizens with the basic services expected from local government in a quality manner. Starting with goal setting, and continuing through the City Manager’s proposal and Council’s discussions, this was a planning and budget season that all in Novi should be proud of. We the People are pleased that our good Mayor, City Council and City Administration worked so well together to agree upon what appears to be an excellent financial plan for the coming year. This continues to be one of the best, if not the best, team ever assembled to manage our fine city, and the results show. Well done and thank you to all involved in the planning and budget process.
p.s. – We thought it odd, but not that unusual, that Council Member Andrew Mutch – a stanch supporter of the Fuerst Farm property preservation - was against moving funds toward that venue and instead suggested those funds be used for roads. Mutch continues to be the lone obstructionist who can’t seem to agree with anyone on anything, and seems to simply look for reasons to disagree with the majority time and time again. The
