Commitment

12/19/2006

Novi High School's attendance policy is straight forward. Arrive late unexcused or miss 10 classes and you lose credit for the class.  Novi High School, quite simply,  requires 90% attendance to pass a class.

This is a prudent, common sense policy that works well toward ensuing kids are in school, and we've heard nary a complaint about it.

Under these simple high school rules, two of our own Novi City Council Members would fail their class - Novi City Council Meetings.

That's right - Toni Nagy and Lynne Paul either missed or were late for 11 meetings each in 2006. 11 of 37 meetings. 30% of the meetings.

That means they were actually seated on time and paying attention to city business when meetings started just 70% of the time in 2006.

That's a C- at best.

And these are the same two Novi City Council Members who are second-guessing our city administrators lately?

Folks, this does not make any sense and it's disrespectful to the People of Novi who elected them, and to other City Council Members.

Many people run for the Novi City Council every two years, and many people would gladly show up for every meeting on time, given a chance to do so.

We the People are not pleased that two of our elected City Council Members can't even attend meetings frequently enough to "pass the class" by our good high school principal's rules.

Toni Nagy and Lynne Paul both set a poor example in 2006. Hopefully, their seats will be filed at 7:00 p.m. for every meeting in 2007 - by them or someone else who's willing to attend every meeting, on time.

p.s. - We've still not heard a good reason
not to approve the Novi Police Dept.
firing range as proposed by city
        administrators. Looks like it might
just end up being built at the current
        police station after all...

Kudos to Mayor Landry and Council
Members Gatt and Mutch - each had
        just one absence in 2006.
