Comedy Central at City Council

8/11/04

There's no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.
  ~ Will Rogers

We don't usually say much about some of the strange things that are at times spoken (misspoken?) during Novi City Council Meetings. However, this week's meeting, while short on big-ticket agenda items, had so many interesting little discussions that, well, our own Channel 13 turned in to Comedy Central for a while Monday.

Here's some of what happened...

First off, poor Mr. Korte addressed Council about the definition of "noxious weeds," and pleading for his flower's lives.  Seems that what he considers nice flowers, others consider weeds.  He doesn't want them bulldozed.  So just what is a "noxious weed" anyway, Mr. City Forester?

Next, the Novi Library requests a Gaming License to raffle-off a quilt.  Who'd have guessed that a library needed a license for that?  Chief Shaeffer -- please be sure to check that license carefully!

Then there was a discussion about naming the new park in Novi. Various suggestions were offered; most sound. The one idea that was unusual though, was when Council-member Laura Lorenzo explained that the park should be named after the highest bidder.  We can just see it now -- Hooters Park of Novi!

Laura Lorenzo struck again shortly thereafter, suggesting that the Novi Community Schools pay for a new sidewalk on Eleven Mile Road near Parkview Elementary School, since it's primarily kids that would use it. Uh, OK; brilliant!  Charge the kids for the concrete they walk on!

We the People usually find City Council Meetings a tad, well, boring for the most part. But this week's meeting was one they should duplicate onto DVDs and rent at BlockBuster -- in the comedy section!

All I need to make a comedy is a
park, a policeman and a pretty girl.

p.s. - On a more serious note, kudos to Community EMS for the donation of two AEDs (automatic external defibrillators) to the City, and to the City for the foresight and communication on updated power failure plans. Well done, Mr. Pearson and team!
