Novi High School Teacher / Coach
Inducted Into Two Halls of Fame

10/14/05  MORE ON SMITH   MORE FROM ALMA COLLEGE

Novi High School teacher and 25-year veteran cross county and track coach Robert Smith will be inducted into the Alma College and South Lyon High School Halls of Fame this weekend.

Tonight, Smith will be honored as a inductee at Alma College. Only one percent of Alma College athletes are so honored.

To this day, Smith owns the MIAA 440-yard record with a time of 48.7 seconds – it was the final year that imperial distances were used by the MIAA. But that was just the tip of the Smith iceberg, as he qualified for the NCAA Championships in '77 and ‘78. He won four MIAA Championships in three different events – triple jump, 440-yard, 400 meter and was named All-MIAA 13 times in six different events and was the MIAA Most Valuable Runner in 1978.

Saturday, Smith will be honored by South Lyon High School. Smith was a stand-out athlete as a Lion, and graduated in 1974.

Congratulations to Novi High School teacher and coach Robert Smith on some well-deserved recognition.
